Q&A: Focus on One or Multiple Desires?

January 5, 2011 | 26 Comments »

Great question came in from a new friend I wanted to ask you all to weigh in on.

(Plus it seems a timely one as many of us have multiple desires we’re launching for the new year.)

Here’s the question as it was emailed to me:

is it better to focus on manifesting one thing in your life (like clearing all debt) or is it okay to include a lot of things that make you feel good (like health, well being, etc.) in your visualizing and affirmations?

My initial response was that either approach works, and I started to share my personal experience (because I have noticed a difference) but then realized I wanted to hear everyone else’s results, too.

What do you think?  Is it better to focus on one desire at a time or does it still work when you work on multiple desires at once?

  1. That’s what I was thinking, Pernille. It works both ways and there’s no right or wrong.

But I did personally reflect on different results for each approach … all of it though was based on exactly what you suggest: do what feels best.

Thanks for starting the conversation, my friend!

  2. Pernille Madsen says:

Great question and I guess the answer will differ from person to person!

My experience is that both of them works. SOmetimes it works best for me to focus only or mostly on one thing. Sometimes it works fine for me to focus on various things at a time.

My advice is to do what feels best; focus on one thing only, when that feels best, and focus on a lot of things, when that feels best 🙂

  3. Hee hee … “ADD Manifester.” You crack me up, Janelle!

Sounds to me like your imagination is running wild IN THE VORTEX, in which case, you can’t go wrong. 🙂

I was going to say that I’ve done it both ways in the past, and sometimes what works best is when I’m not directly focused on what I want, but rather taking back doors into the vortex. Like, I want my career to take off so I go on a dog walk. That’s served me well.

Other times I’ve kept pray rain journals on one specific topic, and that works like a charm.

Other times I’ve journaled about the general good life, and while that works too, the progress is kind of broad and widespread, so it’s not as easy to point to something and say “Hey, it’s working!” It’s a much more gradual improvement.

  4. I agree with Pernille to “do what feels best; focus on one thing only, when that feels best, and focus on a lot of things, when that feels best”

    re: Janelle’s insight

Getting clear helps. But I also think that you shouldn’t discount the ideas that pop up when ‘visualizing something delicious.’ Those are usually your higher self/mind giving your inspired clues about what is possible, and perhaps, can help you get even clearer on what it is you desire.

You communicate with your higher self through imagination. So let it run wild. And then you can pick and choose what is a best fit for you. The ideas that pop up are part of the manifestation process.

  5. Janelle says:

Thanks for writing about (and answering) my question Jeannette! I guess I could get clear about what I want most first before the Universe delivers. I sometimes feel like the ADD manifester. I’ll start visualizing something delicious and then something else will pop up that seems even more delicious and I’ll get into that and pretty soon I’m somewhere in Costa Rica doing yoga. My imagination does run wild. Getting clear about what I want may be the first point of order. 🙂

  6. Nice observation, Nat!

Plus, I’m all for running wild. lol

    Thanks for posting!

  7. BarbaraM says:

Thank you Jeannette for opening this question. Actually it has been on my mind quite some time. I think that the best thing it to do it in a way which feels good for you – as Pernille already said.

The similar question I have is: Can you have two successful companies at the same time? Any thoughts about this? I think yes.

  8. BarbaraM says:

    companies = businesses

  9. I absolutely believe Yes on that, BarbaraM.

In fact, sometimes that might even work BEST.

It does come back to what feels best, huh?

  10. MissyB says:

Go for shed loads…it lessens the neediness behind just focussing on one. At least for me.

  11. I totally get how that would work, MissyB.

    Thanks for the response!

  12. Laura says:

I agree that it really is up to what works best for each person. For me, in my recent experience, I have found that I have focused on multiple desires and give them equal time in my meditation where I see myself having these things and really gaining clarity. I deliberately go through all areas of my life and what it would look like if they were all as I’d love them to look.

Since there is usually one area that holds more importance (or will affect the others and thus allow them to manifest more easily) that is the one where the shift occurs. I had that experience this past summer when I was desiring to move, a new relationship, new work opportunites, new sources of income, etc.

I decided I was going to move (as you’ve heard ad nauseum!) and all the areas just fell into place as the one (and most important to me at that time) desire can to manifest, the others soon followed.

  13. You know what, Laura, what I just realized in reading your answer is that the only hangup here is that we think we might be hanging it up by doing the “wrong” or less effective thing.

Abe talks about how you don’t have to have your attention on what you WANT, even. JUST FEEL BETTER!

Get in the vortex, and it all starts coming together.

PS – there’s never “ad nauseum” with you. 🙂

  14. I concur with the other Wise Ones in the above comments. It depends on individual capabilities. Also what one has going on in one’s life at the present moment i.e. state of mind. Undecided or unclear? Perhaps start with one and gravitate toward a few more ~ scattered energy doesn’t drive the thought home for some but others just hold that kind of vibe and it works for them…

  15. Stella, there IS something really delicious about a laser focused positive thought, huh?

In fact, you’re making me want to have one right now. hee hee

  16. Sara says:

I would intend that any time spent cultivating something I want actually propels and fuels alignment with other desires as well.

Here’s my experience with this so far – I KNOW my body loves to move on a daily/or at least a 5 times a week basis. And one of my intentions for the year is to get better at honoring that knowledge more often. I also want to explode my LOA Parenting business. 🙂 So what I’ve been doing vibrationally is thinking of these two intentions as personal friends of mine that are blossoming on their own with a little action and input from me here and there. AND, I think of these two intentions as friends that I’ve introduced to each other – so they’re not separate, they’re playing TOGETHER with me on the same playground.

When I’m spending time moving my body, I’m intending and SEEING how this is the absolute BEST thing I can do for my business AS WELL AS my body. And while I’m with a client, writing web content, or a newsletter – I’m seeing the proof that this is the BEST thing I can do for my body as well as for my business.

And this is WORKING!!! I’m attracting more clients, more and more people are emailing me, falling in love with what I’m offering. And my body looks and feels better and better every day. 🙂

Set whatever intention feels good, and feel the truth of how cultivating and nurturing ANY desire is simultaneously propelling other desires into manifestation as well. 🙂

It doesn’t have to be one or the other – I’m a big fan of BOTH, AND!!

Working on one helps with ALL!!

    woot to that!!!

    (I like your style!)

  19. Lois says:

I think the most important thing to focus on is feeling good. All of our desires are already lined up for us and the abundant universe is able to supply more than one desire at a time, so I don’t think it is necessary to focus on just one thing at a time. I enjoy using Abraham’s “Creative Workshop” and I usually have several desires that I focus on during that time. I have found that lots of times when I receive one desire, I am feeling really good and that seems to make it easier to reach for another desire. We are expanding all of the time, so I think that we can have multiple desires simultaneously.

  20. Well said, Lois. Thanks for weighing in and sharing your personal experience.

The “feeling good” focus is a common theme in our conclusions here, huh?
Can’t go wrong with that. 🙂

  21. helen says:

    I agree with Lois.
Also anytime I have manifested anything it is always when I have had a clear vision that it was mine so much so that there was no conscious focus on it, and the main feeling was one of happiness or a kind of knowing that the thing was mine anyway. Hard to put that feeling into words, but I am sure all of you know what I am talking about. I call it my connection to source vibe.

  22. Helen, your comment reminds me of how all the LOA experts’ advice – well, much of it – says to get crystal clear rich focus on the end result in order to aid its swift manifestation.

I’m noticing that the comments here say focus on what feels best, but many of our experts (probably me included even, if I remembered everything I ever wrote) seem to say get the strong laser focus in place on the desire you want to create.

Maybe there isn’t as much a contrast in the answers here vs. the one you’ll find the books, but it is curious to me.

At any rate, I concur with your conclusion that the feeling/knowing is what makes the difference.

Thanks for dropping by to share your wisdom!

  23. M says:

I am a newbie in this but have noticed that *everything* improves even if I do not give everything full attention. In the beginning I would wish for many things — weight loss, more money, better relationships etc. After a while, I got tired of concentrating so hard on all those things everyday. I would let go and my only wish is now to feel good. I want to feel good! And I do everything I can, every day, to feel good. I find that all my ‘other issues’ (initial desires) improve too. Isn’t that the nicest thing? 🙂

  24. Way to dial in on what really matters, M!

(In my opinion, that answer deserves more than just an initial credit. Next time, be Wise M at least.) 😉

Agreed, it IS the nicest thing how that works.
    🙂

  25. Actually, guys, this makes me wonder how you’re listening to Abraham’s meditations … are you listening to just the same one every day? Or do you mix all of them up day by day?

  26. Bubbles says:

Oh, that is an interesting topic, Jeannette! I listen to any of the meditations just as my whim goes on that day, which CAN mean that I do the financial one for two weeks in a row. What I noticed is that the focus of the meditation is of no importance at all, in that any of them does first and foremost bring me into the vortex, and I did, for instance, release some minor body issues while I mostly listened to the financial meditation.

Also I tend to not chose the meditation that adresses the topic I know I have the most resistance about right now. Because it would be more difficult to get into the vortex that way.
Concurring with Abrahams idea of going the easiest way – it is not important what we get into the Vortex ABOUT, it is important that we DO.
